Police in Masaka are investigating circumstances under which a husband and wife were attacked and beaten up by unknown thugs, killing a woman and injuring her husband in the process.

The incident happened on June 9, 2024, at around 10:00 p.m. in Makonzi village, Bukakata sub-county in Masaka district.

The victims have been identified as Rafosi Bukenya, in his late 30s, while his deceased wife was identified as Agnes Nakatte, a 37-year-old Rwandese national, both residents of Bulaga Makonzi in Bukakata sub-county, Masaka district.

Preliminary information indicates that the couple was attacked on their way back home after selling off their maize at the Kisuku Makonzi landing site.

During an interview with Bukenya (a victim and husband to the deceased) on June 10, 2024, he said that they had gone to sell off their maize at the Kisuku Makonzi landing site, but on their way back home, an unidentified thug popped up and attacked them, hitting him on the neck with a stick, leaving him unconscious. He added that when the wife attempted to fight back, she was hit with a big stick on the head, which caused heavy bleeding, thus losing consciousness.

Bukenya noted that when he regained consciousness, his wife was overbleeding, prompting him to rush her to the nearby clinics, which failed to handle her situation. He later proceeded to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, where she passed on arrival.

’’My wife died in my arms because of the heavy bleeding resulting from the deep head injury,’’ Bukenya said.

Nakatte’s body was left at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem, and the police said investigations are ongoing and that a statement will be released soon.
