Police Hunt for Murder Suspect of Prostitute in Masaka

A joint press statement commemorating International Women’s Day 2024 reported that eight sex workers were murdered in Uganda within a span of three months, from December 2023 to March 2024.

Police in Nyendo are investigating circumstances under which a 30-year-old prostitute was murdered in Masaka city.

The body of the deceased was discovered on October 21, 2024, in the market triangle zone in Nyendo. The deceased has been identified as Angel, a prostitute in the market triangle zone.

Initial reports show that Angel was last seen with a man called Godi in the wee hours of Monday morning, October 21, 2024, in Jackeline Natukunda’s bar, Market Triangle Zone.

A local identified as Mark Kisekka revealed that the locals of Nyendo Kasana zone who live near the entrance of Good Foundation Primary School in Masaka are the ones who discovered the victim’s lifeless body in the garden behind the school buildings.

Kisekka added that the body was found dressed in a short red and white skirt, a coat, black open shoes, and a black handbag beside the body.

’’Godi was the last person who was hanging out with Angel in the bar and is currently on the run, which shows that he knows what happened to her; therefore, police should arrest him,” Kisekka noted.

In an interview with journalists on October 21, 20242, the Greater Masaka Police Spokesperson, SP Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the incident and revealed that a manhunt for the murder suspect is on.

Kasirye added that a suspected murder case has been opened against Godi. He further urged Godi to present himself to police so as to aid in police investigations.

’’Police condemns such acts of crime, and whoever has information on Godi’s whereabouts should inform police so that justice is served for Angel’s death,’’ he said.

Recent reports highlight a rise in the killings of sex workers and women in Uganda, particularly in Kampala and surrounding areas.

The statement emphasizes the impunity surrounding these crimes and calls for thorough investigations and legal reforms to protect sex workers and hold perpetrators accountable. For example, Madrine Nakuya and Esther are sex workers who were found dead under violent circumstances.

Additionally, on August 14, 2024, police in Njeru, Buikwe District, found a 45-year-old woman, Naigaga Rachael, dead under mysterious circumstances in a guesthouse room in Namwezi Zone, Mbiko, Njeru Municipality.
