Police has charged, arrested, and detained two government drivers who were captured driving recklessly in Uganda.

Police said that the arrest occurred on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 following a video recording from a whistleblower.

Police identified the drivers as Steven Bukenya who was driving a Hilux Registration Number UG 0120Q and Dan Sabiti, driving a Land Cruiser Registration Number UP 4911.

According to SP Michael Kananura, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, on September 18, 2023, a whistleblower cited and recorded the actions of the government drivers.

“These drivers were observed driving recklessly along Ntinda Stretcher Road and based on the compelling evidence captured in the shared video, both drivers were promptly arrested,” Kananura said.

He commended everyone for taking the initiative to record and distribute these crucial recordings and urged them to keep doing so until road safety in Uganda is addressed.

Kananura also issued a warning to all motorists who act recklessly, causing traffic congestion and risk.

The two drivers are being detained at Jinja Road Police Station, pending their court appearance.

The arrest is fulfilling the Police Operation known as Fika Salama, among other interventions in a bid to contain fatalities on Ugandan roads.

Operation Fika Salama is a special intervention aimed at checking on errant drivers on roads.
