The Kampala Metropolitan Police in intensifying their investigation into the suspected poisoning of 23-year-old Martha Ahumuza Murari have arrested two brothers.
Ahumuza’s sudden collapse and death at the upscale Mezo Noir nightclub in Kololo has prompted the temporary closure of the establishment.
The case has raised serious concerns about nightlife safety and the potential for foul play in seemingly secure environments.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango in a statement revealed that detectives are focusing on the circumstances surrounding Martha’s interaction with Edward Mugabo, a cashier at Mezo Noir, and his brother, Joseph Kalenzi.
“The two brothers have been arrested and are under custody, we are treating this as a potential case of intentional intoxication, pending further forensic analysis,” Onyango said.
The timeline provided by police indicates that Martha met Mugabo at the bar around 2:00 AM on Wednesday.
The two reportedly consumed drinks together until 3:30 AM, after which they moved to the manager’s office, a room notably devoid of CCTV surveillance.
Police mention that it was within this private space that Martha experienced a sudden and severe medical episode, leading to her collapse and sudden death.
“The absence of CCTV in that particular office is a significant point of interest, It raises questions about why this blind spot exists and what transpired within those walls,” they stated.
Medical reports from Kampala Hospital, where Martha was rushed by Mugabo and Kalenzi, paint a grim picture.
Doctors have confirmed that while her vital organs are functioning, she has been declared brain unresponsive, placing her on life support. This critical condition has caused immense distress to her family.
In response to the incident, Mezo Noir’s management has issued a statement expressing their cooperation with the police investigation, announcing a temporary closure out of respect for the ongoing inquiry and to facilitate a thorough examination of the premises.
Additionally, the investigation continues as forensic teams analyze samples from the scene and medical tests are conducted to determine the exact substance that may have caused Martha’s untimely death.
“We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served, the safety of patrons in entertainment venues is paramount, and we will leave no stone unturned,” Onyango added.
The two brothers remain in custody as primary suspects to aid in further investigations.
