Police in Omoro have arrested a mother who hid her newly born baby boy in the bush and later dumped him in a pit latrine.
The Police Spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga during a weekly security brief held at Naguru Police Headquarters on Monday, October 2, 2023, said that, on September, 25, 2023, Collin Apio, a 21-year-old resident of Lukwor parish, decided to go to the bush at 5am in the morning where she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy following intimidation and harassment from her brother.
“We established that due to the acts of intimidation and threats from the brother, instead of wrapping the child in warm clothes, she instead got fresh grass and used it to wrap the baby boy and kept him in the bush and came home,” Enanga said.
He added that, she continued bleeding but did not go to hospital, and on the 2nd day, she went to check on the baby, removed the grass and breastfed him. However, on the third day, Apio found the baby had been bitten by red ants and vulnerable.
“On the third day, September 27, 2023, when she went back to the bush, she found that red ants had attacked the infant who was still alive but very weak. Instead of taking the baby to hospital, she went and dumped him in a pit latrine,” Enanga revealed.
According to Enanga, police managed to retrieve the baby but unfortunately was already dead, adding that, Apio was arrested but was still bleeding so she was referred to hospital.
Police has urged stranded mothers and adults to always liaise with the Police Child and Protection Unit to save unwanted children and give them homes to live in since every child should have a chance to live in a safe and healthy setting or home.
Police have launched a hunt on Apio’s brother to have him arrested for intimidating her and threatening violence.
