Police in Kampala are holding a group of activists in custody for allegedly conducting an illegal protest.
The activists, including Agather Atuhaire, the head of Agora, a local non-governmental organization in Kampala, and her partner Godwin Toko, were arrested alongside several others on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
Police intercepted the group as they walked towards the Supreme Court in protest while holding placards bearing different writings.
Atuhaire confirmed the protest was against the continued trial of civilians in the Military Court Martial.
This stemmed from the recent trial of a local city lawyer, Eron Kiiza, who was arrested and immediately jailed for nine months by the court martial for contempt of court.
The suspects are being held at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala and are expected to be presented at Buganda Road Court later.
Lawyer Kiiza was part of the legal team representing Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale in the court martial, Makindye.
