Police in Napak District have apprehended two suspects for allegedly vandalising road signposts along the Matany-Kokeris road.

Longole Mike, the MT. Moroto regional police Spokesperson, said the suspects are David Ongom, aged 29, and Isaac Loyile, 25, both residents of Longalom village in Matany Sub-county, Napak District.

Longole stated in a press statement dated Saturday, July 8th, that the duo was arrested during routine surveillance conducted by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) on July 5th, 2023.

“Allegedly, on the same night at approximately 11:00 PM, the suspects employed an axle blade to sever 14 road sign posts along the Matany-Kokeris Road, subsequently selling them to scrap dealers,” said Longole.

Longole said that a team of detectives and uniformed personnel responded to the report and immediately visited the scene, meticulously documenting and capturing photographic evidence.

He said statements from relevant witnesses were also recorded, aiding the ongoing investigation process.

“A positive turn of events emerged as all 14 road signposts were successfully recovered from the involved scrap dealers and are now being held as crucial exhibits,” he added.

However, according to Longole, the scrap dealers in question have been summoned to Napak CPS for further interrogation, seeking additional insights into the matter.

Road signposts serve as essential markers, ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users.
