Police in Kassanda have arrested four suspects in connection with the brutal machete attack on Kabaka’s deputy gombolola chief of Kassanda district.

The suspects identified as Jafali, Kikawa, Sunday, and Vicent Kikanzira were arrested in the wee hours of Tuesday, October 15, 2024, in Luswa village, Myanzi sub-county in Kassanda district.

The suspects in question are accused of robbing, attacking, and brutally hacking Ssalongo Eric Sonko, the Kabaka’s deputy Gombolola Chief of Mutuba Musanvu Myanzi, on October 13, 2024, leaving him in a very critical condition.

In an interview with journalists on October 15, 2024, the LC I of Luswa village, Irene Nabitosi, said that she was shocked to see these people being arrested by police without her knowledge.

Nabitosi added that she is still waiting for the Kassanda police report on the details pertaining to the operation.

’’I am going to talk to the Kassanda DPC to find out why this operation was carried out without informing the local leaders about it.” Nabitosi said.

The District Police Chief (DPC) of Kassanda district, Saul Musasizi, confirmed the arrests, disclosing that the operation happened in the wee hours of the morning because it was easier to get all suspects than during the day.

Musasizi further said that he could not give more information on this matter because investigations are still going on and a statement will be released soon.

’’I am not going to reveal a lot because investigations are still ongoing and this case is delicate; however, once they are done, the Kassanda police PRO will release a statement,’’ Musasizi noted.

He added that the four suspects are part of a machete-wielding gang that has been attacking and robbing the locals in Kassanda district, hence why police are still carrying out more investigations to smoke out the rest.

This situation highlights ongoing challenges related to crime and community-police relations in Kassanda district, hence increasing fear among the locals. For example, on July 13, 2024, Abdul Wamala, a boda-boda chairperson, and his wife were attacked by machete-wielding thugs in Wetiye village. Both sustained severe injuries and remained in critical condition following the assault. Local officials noted that the increase in such violent incidents is due to youth engaging in alcohol and drug abuse and idleness.
