Police Arrest Driver Over Reckless Driving, Overloading on Jinja Highway

Police in Kampala has confirmed the arrest of a male driver on account of reckless driving and overloading passengers aboard a commuter coaster along Jinja Road on Sunday, 7th September, 2025.

The suspect (names withheld) was intercepted by authorities at the New Nile Bridge after a concerned passenger on board contacted the police through their hotline complaining about the driver’s misconduct.

Police Traffic and Road Safety Spokesperson, SP Michael Kananura, said that during vehicle inspection, extra chairs had been placed in the corridors of the coaster to accommodate more passengers than legally allowed.

“The vehicle was carrying excess passengers and was full to maximum capacity, posing a serious threat to road safety and the passengers on board,” Kananura noted.

The driver of the overloaded coaster UBP 991U was intercepted while traveling from Pallisa to Kampala late that night.

There have been several other incidents of overloading of passengers with another recently leaving many people shocked as Police arrested a driver and 5 passengers who were dangerously perched on top of the roof of motor vehicle registered UBH 183S as they were heading for a football match in Bunamwaya.

The incident occurred on the Kampala–Masaka highway, near Nsangi in Mpigi District, Police intercepted a Toyota Hiace which was carrying a total of 31 people with number plates hidden. The driver was charged with concealing number plates, driving outside his licensed class, and breaching the operator’s licence conditions. The passengers were charged with riding in a dangerous position.

Kananura commended the vigilance of the passenger who raised the alarm in the Jinja case stressing that public involvement is key in curbing reckless road behavior.

He reminded the general public that road safety is a collective responsibility and commended the individual who reported the matter.
