Police in Wakiso District are holding over 20 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who were arrested for allegedly inciting violence and disrupting traffic along the Mityana highway.
The group had assembled at Bujjuko trading centre today, Monday, 6th October, 2025 in anticipation of the arrival of NUP presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, who was scheduled to hold a rally in Mityana district.
However, Kyagulanyi changed his travel route and used Hoima Road on a boda boda as he made an attempt to evade Police deployment.
On hearing this, his supporters began drumming, whistling, and blocking the road with logs and stones, causing major traffic disruptions and posing a threat to public order.
However, attempts by police to disperse the group peacefully were reportedly ignored.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrests on his Twitter (X) page, @Patrickonyango1.
According to him, the suspects were taken into custody after repeated warnings went unheeded.
“We issued clear directives for them to clear the road and allow traffic to flow. When they chose defiance, we moved in to restore order,” Onyango said.
The 29 suspects are currently detained at Wakiso Police Division, and police say they are likely to face charges related to unlawful assembly, inciting violence, and obstruction of public roads.
Onyango warned that while the public has the right to support candidates of their choice, political enthusiasm must not translate into lawlessness.
“We are in a political season, and emotions are high. But this does not give anyone the right to disrupt public order or endanger lives,” he added.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
