The Ministry of Internal Affairs has emphasized the importance of providing accurate information when applying for a child’s passport, reminding parents and guardians to ensure that they enter their child’s details correctly on the application forms, rather than their own information.

Simon Peter Mundeyi, the ministry’s spokesperson, was addressing the media at the police headquarters in Naguru on Monday, November 18, 2024.

“The names, the date of birth, and all those other details should be verified to ensure that everything is right before actually submitting and paying, because incorrect applications will require a parent to submit a new application with correct child details and fresh payments. Of course, there is a fund request from URI and Uganda Revenue Authority,” he said.

According to Mundeyi, immigration verifies this information before submitting and before processing the passports, and it is the responsibility of parents applying for their children’s passports to double-check all information for accuracy.

He further emphasized that those who pay erroneously for a wrong passport can ask for a refund from URA; for example, applying for an ordinary passport but accidentally applying for a diplomatic passport, a refund can be made through writing to URA, explaining and detailing why a person made such a payment and also attaching a receipt.

While in parliament on Thursday, August 15, 2024, the Internal Affairs State Minister, Gen David Muhoozi, said that the national identity cards that expire in 2024 will remain valid for another year.

He also led a team of technocrats, including officials from the National Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs.

The minister said that the extension is contained in a statutory instrument published in the gazette on Monday, August 12, 2024.
