Over 500 Delegates Convene in Rwanda to Discuss Africa’s Tax Future

In an effort to mobilize domestic resources to support sustainable development goals in the changing global financial landscape, over 500 delegates from across Africa have convened in Kigali, Rwanda, for the African Tax Administrators Forum (ATAF), focusing on the theme Financing Our Future In An Evolving Global Environment.

The high-level meeting was unveiled by the Revenue Authorities of Uganda and Rwanda on their official X handle on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.

Logan Wort, the Executive Secretary of the African Tax Administration Forum, said that the high-level session scheduled to run from December 2-6, 2024, aims to explore the critical roles of tax administrations in mobilizing domestic resources to support sustainable development goals amidst a changing global financial landscape.

“As the tax landscape evolves, attending the ATAF Annual Meetings offers valuable insights into best practices, innovations, and challenges in tax administration. We’ll engage in workshops, presentations, & discussions that will shape favorable youth tax policies,” Wort said.

According to Wort, participants engaged in discussions pertaining to enhancing Africa’s development agenda, emphasizing strategies for effective resource mobilization and the impact of evolving financial architectures on continental aspirations.

During the 2nd day of the ATAF Annual meeting on December 4, 2024, African tax administrators agreed to make progress in digitalizing their operations to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of revenue collection and service delivery.

However, participants noted that there remain a range of challenges, including the huge capital investment, human resource challenges, as well as the digital preparedness of countries.

The forum underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving sustainable economic growth across Africa.
