Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango has said the blocked United Forces for Change protests can wait until the Non-Aligned Movement and G77+China summits are over to take place.

This follows the deployment of security personnel to the residences of Robert Kyagulanyi, the interim president of and former FDC Erias Lukwago, and former FDC president Kizza Besigye, stating that this is a preventive measure in accordance with the police mandate.

“The protest can wait because over 4000 delegates are attending the 19th Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Kampala. Hosting the NAM summit presents a special set of security challenges, and Uganda will take pride in having successfully hosted it,” Onyango said.

This follows the recent meeting at FDC Katonga Road offices, where the United Forces of Change declared their intent to protest dilapidated roads in Uganda.

However, police foiled the planned demonstrations, citing a lack of clearance from the Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola, and a history of violence that always ensued during the protests.

Kyagulanyi took to X to address the heavy deployment around his home that is meant to restrain him from carrying out his planned protest.

“Military and police have surrounded our home and put us under house arrest, but the protest is on,” he posted.

Shortly after, Besigye also shared on his X photos of multiple security personnel blocking his home’s entrance in Kasangati.
