The election of village youth committees has seen youths across the country overwhelmingly vote for the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM). This support is linked to the youth’s trust in President Museveni’s leadership and his initiatives in spearheading numerous projects that have improved their livelihoods.

This process took place on June 19, 2025, resulting in the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) dominance, with most of its candidates running unopposed or winning with overwhelming support, overshadowing the opposition, which had few, if any, candidates.

This exercise is part of the ongoing election cycle for Special Interest Groups. Successful candidates at the village level will proceed to elect leaders at the parish, sub-county, district, and national levels.

According to reports reaching this website, the NRM has achieved significant victories in most villages across the country, particularly near Kampala, Kawempe Division commonly referred to as ‘NUP home’s NRM garnered a total of 1080 in the  village youth elections against NUP’s 20 positions ahead of the 2026 elections, as opposition struggled to find candidates to represent their parties.

“Places like Ggaba, Kansanga, Nsambya, Bunga  and Kyanja, home to the Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, have all been painted yellow,” a source from the electoral officials revealed.

Yiga Muhammad, NRM Spokesperson in Masaka City, stated that the NRM has painted greater Masaka yellow, winning 192 out of 202 villages. In Masaka District (rural), counties like Buwunga saw NRM receive 323 votes compared to NUP’s 37, while Kyesiiga had NRM with 145 votes and NUP with 26. He commended City Party Chairman Bulegeya Rogers and his team for their effective mobilization.

He also praised the people of Butambala District for painting almost all their villages yellow and questioned how the NUP, which has threatened to oust President Museveni from Masaka, would achieve this with such performance.

Youths in Eastern Uganda and across the country have praised President Museveni’s leadership and insights in fighting poverty by introducing initiatives like skilling hubs, which have transformed them into income earners rather than job seekers.

Moses Wetonyi, a youth from Mbale City, acknowledged the overwhelming support for the NRM in the village youth elections, citing the able leadership of President Museveni who introduced industrial hubs that have enabled them to secure jobs and avoid idleness.

“We youths of Mbale have greatly benefited from these skilling hubs and industrial parks. We pledge our complete support for the President, and I call upon fellow youths to come and work instead of taking drugs. Jobs are available, and even if you want to run your own business, funds can be accessed through the Parish Development Model,” Wetonyi stated.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party president, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine recently spearheaded nationwide youth village campaigns ahead of the elections to engage all youth and encourage them to vote for the NUP in large numbers.

However, reports following the village youth elections indicate that these efforts fell on deaf ears, as the youth, spoke a different language by overwhelmingly voting for NRM candidates. This exposed the narrative created by the opposition that the youth are aligned with them as a false and self-praise.

Meanwhile, in several villages across the country, NRM candidates won by large margins. In Luwero, many NRM candidates were unopposed after the opposition reportedly failed to field candidates.

Denes Sekabira, MP for Katikamu North, claimed that some NUP aspirants were deliberately sidelined during nominations to favor NRM candidates.

However, Herman Muwuya, the Masaka NRM District Chairperson, dismissed these allegations, stating that the opposition was peddling lies and malice after failing to mobilize viable candidates in several areas, recognizing the power and might of the NRM.

Political experts have noted that opposition has started its early way to losing and have attributed this to the nature of candidates fielded by the parties, citing NUP candidates as a joke. “How do you field a candidate like Kapere who cannot even write his name and expect him to win,” Richard Bard Byamukama a political analyst noted.

Byamukama also noted that the nature of campaign that NUP fronts that is characterized by hate speech and call for violence puts many youths in a state of fear and end up silently detesting the opposition. He noted that on the other hand the NRM has strongly marketed itself as a guarantor of peace and stability, a campaign that has given hope to the youth in the country.
