One Pupil Dead, 117 Critically Injured in Manafwa Fatal Accident

One pupil from Nakhupa Primary School has been confirmed dead while 117 others critically injured in a fatal accident that occurred at Kufu, along Manafwa-Mbale road, on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at around 10:00pm.

According to Manafwa Police, the accident involving a Tata Lorry, owned by Bukusu Corporative Enterprise, with registration number UBJ 994J which was carrying over 200 pupils that were coming from the music, dance and drama competitions that were held at St. Edwards Secondary School lost control and overturned.

The Police identified the pupil who died on spot as Thomas Naminayi, a 16-year-old from Nakhupa Primary School.

Police confirmed that, 117 the casualties were rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital for further medical attention.

However, local authorities said that the pupils had gone for a music competition which started very late and was later stopped by the District Education Officer.

“At around 7:00 pm the District Education Officer (DEO) stopped the exercise and requested the children who may not be able to make it home to stay at the school and travel the next day,” the local authorities said.

Local authorities added that, unfortunately the Head teacher hired a Tata to transport pupils whose driver identified as Godman Mamai was drunk, adding that, he failed to negotiate the corner at Kufu which caused an accident.

The preliminary Police report indicates that, the vehicle was towed to Manafwa Police Station pending thorough inspection, as they still hunt for the driver who is currently on the run.
