The incumbent Member of Parliament for Makindye East, Hon Nyeko Derrick, has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the forthcoming 2026 general polls.
In a statement on (twitter)X today, Nyeko expressed gratitude to his constituents for entrusting him with leadership, noting that his time in office has been marked by a deep commitment to service, integrity, and accountability.
“I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to all who have believed in me throughout the years I have been entrusted with leadership. It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honor, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote,” Nyeko said.
Although he acknowledged the disappointment his decision may bring to his supporters and campaign team, the legislator emphasized that his choice was made after deep reflection. He added that stepping aside does not erase the journey and victories he has shared with his people.
Nyeko, who previously defected from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), rose to prominence in 2021 when he defeated the then-incumbent, Hon. Ibrahim Kasozi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
Meanwhile, musician and former NBS TV journalist Robert Sekidde, popularly known as Tuff B, has declared his intention to contest for the Makindye East parliamentary seat. NUP is yet to release its official list of aspirants for 2026, and the public waits to see how the race unfolds.
