On Tuesday, 4th March 2025, National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) partnered with Luwero Industries Limited to enhance local engineering capacity and reduce reliance on imported spare parts.
As part of NWSC’s efforts to strengthen local engineering solutions and reduce delays caused by importing essential spare parts, This collaboration, aims to cut operational costs, improve water supply efficiency, and promote self-reliance in equipment maintenance.
NWSC Managing Director Dr. Silver Mugisha emphasized the significance of the partnership, noting that delays in importing critical equipment, such as water pumps, have impacted service delivery.
“By working with Luwero Industries, we can revamp and adjust existing equipment instead of waiting months for new imports. This ensures standby pumps are always available to prevent service disruptions,” Dr. Mugisha said.
He further explained that Kampala’s water challenges have been worsened by extreme weather conditions, increasing demand which has affected the supply sources. In response, NWSC has introduced higher-capacity pumps and bulk rationing as immediate measures, as they await long-term solutions, such as the Kampala Water Supply Network Expansion Project which is underway.
Luwero Industries General Manager Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Muzeeyi reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting NWSC in improving water and sanitation services.
“We are proud to partner with NWSC to address Uganda’s water supply challenges. This collaboration will not only improve efficiency but also promote research and development, allowing Uganda to manufacture its own engineering solutions,” Maj. Gen. Muzeeyi said.
He further stated that homegrown solutions are key to national development.
“This is in line with President Museveni’s vision of self-reliance. By working together, we can create long-term solutions that strengthen Uganda’s engineering sector and reduce unnecessary expenditure on imports,” he said.
The partnership, initially set for three years, will focus on manufacturing spare parts, municipal wastewater management, material testing, and capacity development.
