The National Unity Platform (NUP) has vowed to continue putting pressure on courts of law to release the many political prisoners who are still in jail for no reason.

While addressing journalists at Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) City Hall on November 9, 2023, NUP chairman for mobilization Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu confirmed the development, saying that as a party, they have continued to respect the rule of law and the courts of law, but some people continue to be used by the powers above.

He vowed that NUP will not give up on the political prisoners because it is a party that fronts fighting for human rights.

“As a party, we shall not stop here; we shall continue checking on our arrested comrades, and we are sure the people holding them in custody will get a soft heart and let them go free, “Nyanzi said.

“We continue to stand with all our comrades in prison, and we want to assure you that we shall keep pushing for your release. Just be strong and know we are doing whatever it takes to ensure you regain your freedom,” he added.

Nyanzi said this as he followed up on the case of NUP activist Habib Buwembo, who has been in Luzira since September 2023, after being arrested for having planned to organize a press conference to talk about the Karamoja iron sheet thieves.

“He has been brought to city hall magistrates court three times and still was unable to get bail today after the trial magistrate handling his case fell ill with malaria,” Nyanzi noted.

Buwembo’s hearing has been adjourned to Friday, November 10, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., where the ill magistrate promised to send Buwembo’s verdict to the magistrate on duty to read it on her behalf.

Buwembo is among the many others who are allegedly incarcerated in various prisons and held in cells without trial.
