The National Unity Platform (NUP) secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya has threatened to drag the Electoral Commission (EC) to courts of law over alleged sabotage of several NUP candidates during party nomination.

While addressing the press at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule on Monday, September, 8, 2025, Rubongoya alleged that the EC’S move to deny several NUP candidate nominations, was a deliberate attempt to have them out of the electoral process.

“For councilor LC 5, there were many people who were denied to be nominated. We still have so many LC 5 chairpersons in many districts and were also not nominated and they are planning to do the same with MP’s,” Rubongoya said.

Rubongoya assured the frustrated candidates that NUP leadership would engage with the Electoral Commission to resolve the issue, and if it is not addressed, they will pursue legal action in court.

“We are going to file a formal complaint at the commission before we take any legal action and we hope they consider their complaints and then nominate them as well,” Rubongoya added.

One of the LC5 contestant for Luuka district, Mr Kagumba Bumali said that since September 4th, 2025 he had submitted all his details but the electoral officer kept telling him that the details were not enough.

“When I went back, they told me only 180 names were valid and I had to go back and brought back over 1000 names and as i went back to be nominated the officer failed to pronounce me and said my documents were still missing,” Kagumba said.

Musisi William from Nakaseke district says he took all the required signatures from 11 sub counties and after delivering them they delayed to verify him saying that his documents were not enough until it was late for him to be nominated.

“The officers used delaying tactics until it was late and refused to nominate me but went ahead to nominate NRM candidates with in the same time as me, this was unfair and I promise to challenge this,” Musisi said.

Jumba Chris from Sembabule district said that he was denied to be nominated as the officer claimed that the payment receipt could not be verified when it was a genuine receipt and there was all proof of payment availed.

With some of the candidates missing out on nomination, we still await the decision from the Electoral Commission if there will be another chance for those candidates with genuine complaints to go through the nomination process again.
