The former legislator, Odonga Otto, has said that the National Unity Platform (NUP) party has made a very big political mistake by asking the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Mathias Nsamba Mpuuga, to resign publicly instead of handling the issue internally and administratively.
Otto stated that NUP made a huge political mistake by asking the former LOP to resign publicly rather than handle the issue internally and administratively.
Otto made these remarks during a topical discussion on national television on Monday, March 4, 2024.
“Actually, NUP has made a very big political mistake; they should have internally and administratively handled the issue of Mpuuga,” he said.
Otto said that Mpuuga is a victim of a bad situation because there is bad politics inside NUP, and that has weakened them.
“NUP should know that all political parties have problems, so the way they decided to hang Mpuuga on the tree is very unfortunate today; it has made NUP weaker and not made them stronger; Mpuuga is a victim of circumstance,” Otto said.
He added that NUP should have persuaded Mpuuga while keeping the party intact.
“They should have persuaded him; they should have even knelt before him that you are in the wrong, but you really need him to resign; we need to keep NUP intact,” he added.
However, according to Otto, the statement released by NUP was in bad faith, adding that Bobi Wine does not like Mpuuga.
“I can say, without fear of contradictions, that statement was in bad faith. There is a bigger problem inside NUP that we cannot understand, but under the face of it, I would say that Bobi Wine does not like Mathias,” he stated.
The NUP party has handled Mpuuga recklessly, and their conduct has indicated to Ugandans that they have more problems to solve than they are trying to solve.
He stated that there are situations where artists are taking part in the political scene, and they think popularity is equivalent to seniority or political fairness.
He advised NUP to reconcile with Mpuuga. Otto also urged that there should be a salary and remuneration board in Uganda because it is the same commission, and the same Parliament that determines the salaries of MPs.
On February 29, 2024, the Member of Parliament representing Nyendo-Mukungwe on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket and the Parliamentary Commissioner in the 11th Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, was given a directive to resign with immediate effect over issues of corruption and abuse of office by his party.
