The leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) Party has directed its Members in Parliament to push for a policy that will address the high hike in school fees and requirements, stressing that it is becoming a major challenge for many parents.

NUP party vice president in charge of Western Region, Jolly Kyomugasho Mugisha, stated that, unless there is a policy that is going to be put in place, many Ugandans are going to find it hard to educate their children.

She made this call while speaking at the NUP headquarters in Makerere, Kavule at a function where the party was handing over scholastic materials to over 180 children whose parents are said to be missing, killed, or in incarceration.

“This one goes to our MPs. Come out and speak on the school fee structure, and the Ministry of Education should also follow up on this or formulate a policy,” Kyomugasho stated.

She stressed that during their time, the school fee structure was not high and everything was affordable to everyone in society, so the leadership of the opposition should look at it and address it.

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, concurred with the party leaders fight to rally the opposition on this matter, saying that the cost of education is high today and the school fees that are being charged by both government and private schools are UGX 3 to 4 million.

“We don’t understand how this works. The economy is doing poorly, people are struggling, and you want to charge UGX 3 to 4 million, including government schools,” Ssenyonyi said.

He further demanded that the Ministry of Education, which is a regulator, accept the opposition appeal and respond to it.
