The top leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party has dismissed the claims that some of its councillors from different divisions in Kampala have been part of an orientation and capacity-building training organised by the top NRM leadership in Garuga, Entebbe, Wakiso district.

The party presented several councillors from various divisions to come out openly and tell the members of the press if they attended the meeting in Garuga, which all of the presented councillors denied, though they confirmed being aware of the meeting and some being contacted.

While speaking to the members of the press on February 16, 2024, at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, the NUP head of mobilisation, Chairman Fred Ssentamu Nyanzi, denied the allegations, saying that this is government propaganda to cause division in the party.

“I appreciate the councillors for coming out strongly to deny these allegations. Kampala is strong, and we will continue to recruit. We are firm and strong, and Kampala will never return to NRM,” Nyanzi said.

Nyanzi accused the NRM government of playing dirty politics by bribing opponents.

“It’s been Museveni’s character for weakening and bribing opponents; the purported list is fake, and the photos are not clear,” Nyanzi added.

On February 15, 2024, the NRM Party Secretary General, Richard Todwong, posted a photo on his X account showing councillors from Kampala at Garuga ready for orientation and wished them good deliberations.

“Grateful for the opportunity to share insights on the NRM philosophy of leadership with the Kampala District Councillors during their orientation training. Wishing them divine guidance and success in their noble endeavour,” Todwong wrote.

In the past, several opposition leaders have been in the spotlight for attending leadership trainings organised by the NRM party.
