The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially launched its internal nomination process for party members seeking to contest various positions ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, June 2, 2025, at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule, Election Management Committee (EMC) Chairperson Harriet Chemutai assured the public of a transparent, free, and fair process.

“We are now receiving applications from NUP members starting today, June 2, until June 23, 2025. No member will be charged for picking or submitting nomination forms at any level,” Chemutai said.

However, Chemutai cautioned that while internal nominations are free, candidates will be required to pay fees to the National Electoral Commission as part of the national election process.

Kampala EMC Chairperson Rose Mary Sebuwuufu clarified that nominations for Kampala and Wakiso districts will take place at the NUP headquarters. She also urged applicants vying for positions like MP, LC5, and mayor to submit their applications at the headquarters as previously communicated.

Sebuwuufu mentioned that all nominees must present key documents, including a valid party membership card, a national ID, and certified academic credentials.

EMC member Rovans Alex Lwanyaga warned candidates against arriving with large crowds to avoid disruptions and traffic congestion. Only five people will be allowed to accompany each candidate into the premises.

As NUP’s internal nomination process kicks off, other parties including the Democratic Party, UPC, and FDC have also begun similar exercises, with final candidate announcements expected in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
