The National Unity Platform (NUP) party leadership has asked Mathias Mpuuga to step down with immediate effect from the position of Parliamentary Commissioner after an ongoing hashtag dubbed Uganda Parliament Exhibition, which exposed  Mpuuga  for benefiting ‘service awards’ up to the tune of  Ugx 500 million.

According to a statement released by the NUP party leadership, the exhibition that has been exposing massive corruption, abuse of office and mismanagement of public affairs of Parliament, exposed their former Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Mpuuga alongside other Parliamentary Commissioners, for awarding themselves huge sums of money.

“Under the scheme, Mpuuga was allocated Ugx  500,000,000, and the nation will recall that the values of the NUP are discipline,  reliability, and inclusiveness. So, all actions of corruption go against these values,” the statement read in part.

In a statement released February 29, 2024, the party leadership acknowledged holding a meeting on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, and deliberated on the way forward, following Mpuuga’s admission of wrong doing.

“In light of his admissions, he was advised that he steps down from his role as Commissioner with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The NUP party leadership requested  their leaders at all levels to do a self-reflection and recommit themselves to the party values.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu replaced Mathias Mpuuga Nsamba as the Leader of Opposition in Parliament with the Nakawa West MP, Joel Ssenyonyi on December 22, 2023, and appointed him as Parliamentary Commissioner.
