The Kampala Central Member of Parliament Muhammad Nsereko has publicly called out the National Unity Platform (NUP) and leader, Robert Kyagulanyi for turning former politician Muhammad Ssegirinya’s last funeral rites into a disrespectful political charade.

In a video making rounds on social media on Monday January 13, 2025, Nsereko accused Bobi Wine of prioritizing personal political interests over the collective grief and respect due to Ssegirinya, who had been a significant figure in Kawempe North constituency.

The Kampala MP expressed frustration with the party’s conduct during such a heart breaking moment.

This was after several media exposed the NUP members hijacking the body of the late Ssegirinya inside the house denying his children right to give their father a solemn burial.

Nsereko emphasized that such behavior was improper of a leader during a time of loss.

“This was not the time for political mobilization but for mourning. The actions of NUP’s foot soldiers were utterly disgraceful” Nsereko said.

He criticized NUP for dominating the funeral proceedings despite having had the opportunity to mourn at their headquarters in Kavule, Makerere.

“This person has been taken to his ancestral home, meaning the family is now responsible. As a party, you mourned at your headquarters. Did you see anyone not a member of your party disrupting you? You had your time to speak about all the good and the bad that you wanted. That is where your part ended,” Nsereko said.

The remarks came in light of ongoing tensions within the political landscape, particularly surrounding issues of leadership and accountability among opposition figures who are capable of politics of tribalism, religion and hate in the country and such confrontations may impact public perception and future collaborations among leaders.

Nsereko accused NUP and its supporters, known as ‘foot soldiers’ of hijacking the funeral and causing chaos and disruption during the event in Masaka.

He expressed his discontent with how the situation was handled, pointing out that the actions taken by NUP turned what should have been a respectful send-off into a political spectacle.

Nsereko warned Kyagulanyi together with his supporters “foot soldiers” to stay away from the forthcoming ceremony of the last funeral rites of late Kato Lubwama scheduled for Friday January 17, 2025.
