The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party member, Isaac Akampulira Rukanda has threatened to sue the Secretary General-Richard Todwong, Chairperson Electoral Commission of NRM-Dr. Tanga Odoi, for failure to organize and carry out internal party elections.

According to Rukanda, NRM last held internal elections in 2016, adding that, the only elections NRM held were for Regional Vice Chairpersons in 2020, where they were tasked with electing a flag bearer.

Rukanda in a phone interview with a Nexus reporter said that, the current office bearers are there illegally, because they have held office for more than one term without elections.

“NRM is a party that was formed on the principle of democracy, equal participation for all. So, how will they give what they don’t have to the youths?” Rukanda asked.

He noted that, the Regional Vice Chairpersons elections were not carried out legally, as it is known that, there was no Delegates Conference held to elect flag bearers, because legally, it is the Delegates who elect the flag bearer.

He said that, the SG and Director Mobilization Cadre, Rosemary Ssenide have failed NRM, citing that, the party last issued membership cards in 2016.

“These people have failed to mobilize and recruit new members for the party, which is why a Parallel office was set up. The NRM National Coordinator, Hadijah Namyalo, and people sitting at the NRM secretariat are not working,” said Rukanda.

The intent to sue follows a petition Rukanda issued earlier this month to the SG, NRM Electoral Commission, Director Mobilization, NRM National Chairperson and National Vice Chairperson, petitioning for the restoration of democratic values and accountability in NRM.
