The Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt Rev Onesimus Asiimwe paid an apostolic visit to opposition figure Dr Kiiza Besigye at Luzira Upper Prison, Kampala, offering spiritual support and solidarity.

Bishop Asiimwe, on Sunday, June 8, 2025, was accompanied by members of the North Kigezi Diocese Kampala Fellowship Leadership, including Lay Canon Alice Turyamureeba, Hon. Winnie Babihuga, Counsel Isaac Atukunda, and Dick Muhwezi.

The delegation was officially received by SSP Bryan Mbaziira, Officer-in-Charge of Luzira Upper Prison.

The visit was rooted in the biblical call from Hebrews 13:3, which urges believers to “remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison.”

During the visit, Bishop Asiimwe led a devotion and prayer session for Dr Besigye and other inmates, emphasizing hope, faith, and resilience.

Dr Besigye, visibly moved, expressed deep gratitude for the visit and the spiritual encouragement offered.

The session ended on a heartfelt note as he led the group in a praise and worship song, reflecting his continued faith despite months in detention.

Dr Besigye and Hajji Abed Rutale were reportedly abducted in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 16, 2024, and have been held in detention since. His continued imprisonment has drawn concern from local and international rights groups.

The North Kigezi Diocese leadership described the visit as an expression of compassion and a demonstration of the Church’s commitment to standing with those facing hardship.
