The Military leaders in coup which hit Niger have accepted Algerian mediation and a six-months transition plan.

This was announced by the Foreign Ministry in Algiers Capital of Algeria on Monday, October 2, 2023.

The Niger Republic has for more than two months been governed by a military regime which took power after over throwing Niger’s elected President, Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023.

In a statement, the Algerian government said that, through the Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it received a statement of acceptance of their mediation aimed at promoting a political solution to the crisis in Niger.

The statement also indicated that, the Algerian President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune tasked Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf with visiting Niger’s Capital-Niamey as soon as possible with the aim of launching discussions with all stakeholders.

In August, 2023, Attaf said that, Algeria had proposed a transition period of up to six months with an aim of formulating political arrangements with the acceptance of all parties in Niger, without excluding any party.

“The acceptance of the Algerian initiative strengthens the prospect of a political solution to this crisis,” Algiers said in a statement.

The statement added that, the mediation would pave way towards a peaceful resolution of the crisis whose outcome will benefit the entire region.

On August 6, 2023, the Algerian President had doubtlessly rejected any foreign military intervention in Niger.

On July 26, 2023, a coup de tat occurred in Niger, when the country’s Presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum, and Presidential Guard Commander, General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta, shortly after confirming the coup a success.
