A new witness has linked one of the accused men to the 2015 murder of Senior Principal State Attorney Joan Kagezi.
Testifying before the International Crimes Division of the High Court on Friday, October 24, the witness (who requested anonymity for security reasons) told the panel of four judges that Massajjege John alias Musa personally confessed to taking part in the assassination.
“Massajjege, a close friend of mine for over ten years, told me that he was among those who killed Joan Kagezi,” the witness stated.
This revelation adds weight to the prosecution’s case against Kiseka Daniel (A1), Kibuuka John alias Musa (A2), Massajjege John alias Musa (A3), and Nusur Abdallah Mugole (A4), who are jointly charged with murder and terrorism.
The session followed an earlier ruling by Justice Alice Komuhangi, who found that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence to commit the suspects to trial. The case is now being heard by a full panel of four judges.a
Kagezi was shot dead on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb, as she stopped to buy fruits on her way home. At the time, she was leading the prosecution of Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) suspects accused of masterminding deadly bomb attacks in Kampala.
Her killing sent shockwaves through Uganda’s legal community and drew condemnation from across the region, prompting a lengthy investigation and repeated calls for justice.
With the new testimony, the prosecution hopes to strengthen its argument that the killing was part of a planned attack against state prosecutors handling sensitive terrorism cases.
The trial continues next week, with more witnesses expected to testify as the court examines new evidence in the high-profile case.
