The Kabale (lake Bunyonyi) and Kisoro (Mgahinga) Road Upgrading project (34km) was officially launched on June 13, 2025, at a ground breaking ceremony presided over by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, alongside the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala. Area Members of Parliament and local leaders also attended the event.

Project is expected to significantly boost tourism growth by enhancing road connectivity to some of Uganda’s most scenic and ecologically rich areas.

“This road will open up greater access to Mgahinga National Park and Lake Bunyonyi, two of Uganda’s leading Eco-tourism attractions,” Tayebwa said.

“We are not only improving transport but also unlocking the tourism potential of this entire region.” He added.

The road upgrade is expected to stimulate increased tourist arrivals by reducing travel time, improving comfort, and enhancing the overall experience for visitors to the Kigezi highlands.

Officials say the project will serve as a vital link between key natural attractions, offering easier access to gorilla trekking, hiking, bird watching, and cultural tourism experiences.

Katumba said that the south-western region is endowed with a unique environment and diverse wildlife.

“With this infrastructure, we are giving the tourism sector the backbone it needs to thrive. It is a strategic investment that will benefit local communities, tour operators, and Uganda as a whole,” he added.

The UGX 112 billion project will also cover 6km of town roads, establishment of four ferry landing sites, construction of two roadside markets, installation of four farm produce storage facilities, and provision of electric power to Bwama Island another step toward integrated tourism development.

The works will be executed over a 36-month period by Samcrete Egypt Engineers and Contractors.

Besides improving road access, local leaders believe the project will boost tourism and spark growth in other areas like hospitality, transport, and services creating jobs and raising household incomes in rural communities.

With natural treasures and cultural heritage in abundance, the upgraded road promises to elevate Uganda’s global tourism and preserving its ecological resources for generations to come.
