Nakanyonyi Students Rushed to Hospital over Poisoning, New Details Emerge

Over 150 students of Nakanyonyi Secondary School in Kalagyi-Mukono district have been hospitalized over suspected poisoning.

The victims mostly in the boarding section have been rushed to Naggalama Hospital and Mukono General Hospital for medical attention over alleged food poisoning.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the students started complaining of stomach pain after having supper on Wednesday night, July 19, 2023, and symptoms severed on Thursday, July 20, 2023, after break tea.

“Samples have been picked from the victims and taken to the Government Analytical Laboratory in Wandegeya for examination to ascertain the exact cause of the problem as investigations into the matter continue,” Luke said.

The Headteacher of the school, Amon Balongo has revealed that 96 students were admitted at Naggalama Hospital, 16 were admitted at Mukono General Hospital, while six were admitted at Namirembe Health Centre in Mukono.

Balongo added that, the six who were admitted at Namirembe Health Centre have been discharged and in good condition.

He said that they are currently carrying out head counting of students to ascertain whether none of the students is missing.

Preliminary information from Police, the LCV Chairperson of Mukono district, Rev. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa, the church leaders and the Headteacher indicates that, none of the students has died. They therefore, asked the public to disregard the false information circulating on media platforms of the death of some students.
