The Registrar of the High Court, HW Rosemary Bareebe, has emphasized the value of integrity, diligence, and professionalism to new advocates.
Bareebe congratulated them, saying that the legal profession they have entered is a noble one that entails prestige and responsibility. She urged them to take their new jobs seriously and to hold themselves in the highest esteem.
“There are many challenges in this field, but what will help you persevere is the kind of person you choose to be. Be ethical, set high standards, and serve as a moral authority in society,” Bereebe said.
She made these remarks while presiding over the enrollment ceremony of 134 new advocates at the Court of Appeal Conference Hall on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
Bareebe also exhorted the advocates to continue working with enthusiasm and to aim for professional excellence.
“Be courteous to your colleagues and the court. Build your reputation and name, as these will open up opportunities and help you establish a personal brand,” she added.
She encouraged them to create chances for themselves by utilizing technology, such as social media and the Internet, to their benefit.
Peace Athocon, who spoke on behalf of the Secretary of the Uganda Law Council, emphasized to the new advocates the importance of upholding ethics and integrity, adding that people expect them to find solutions to issues.
She highlighted the importance of adhering to the professional dress code, as it commands a certain level of respect.
Additionally, she underlined the necessity of obtaining a practicing certificate and emphasized the value of continuous learning and staying updated with legal amendments.
Athocon advised the advocates to diversify their knowledge, learn beyond their current expertise, avoid fraud and misappropriation of funds, and maintain a good reputation.
During the enrollment ceremony, the Chief Registrar’s personal assistant, HW Timothy Lumunye, served as the ceremony moderator.
