NDEJJE TRAGEDY: Five Feared Dead, Three Severely Injured after a Fuel Station Wall Collapsing

The territorial Police at Katwe and Ndejje have reported a fatality that occurred at Ndejje after a petrol station wall collapsed on rentals leaving over five people dead while more than three critically injured.

According to police, the incident of a perimeter wall of Good Luck Petrol Station collapsing onto rentals of Proscovia Nalumansi on Monday, November 4, 2023, at around 3am happened in Kanyanya cell, Ndejje division in Makindye Sabagabo.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police in a statement said that, upon receiving the report, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services responded to the crime scene, and with support from the local community promptly initiated rescue efforts.

“Regrettably, five lives were lost in the tragic event. The victims have been identified as Phiona Nabulumba, Nabunywa Geofrey, Moja Fuuku, three-year-old Liana, and Doreen. Our deepest condolences go out to their families and loved ones,” Owoyesigyire said.

He stated that so far, three individuals identified as Gladys Mukisa, and Sadat, among others sustained severe injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at different hospitals.

According to Owoyesigyire, the rescue team assisted by an excavator was continuing with search to ascertain if there are additional individuals trapped under the debris.

He noted that, Katwe Police has launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the root cause of the unfortunate incident.

However, preliminary findings indicate that, the perimeter wall belonging to the petrol station weakened due to heavy rainfall, ultimately leading to its collapse onto the rentals.

The ASP confirmed that, the bodies of the deceased persons have been conveyed to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a thorough post-mortem examination.

Police urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and provide any relevant information that may assist in the ongoing investigations.
