Armed with jerry cans and bottles, the pilgrims from different places around Uganda and the world are seen queuing to fetch the holy water from the taps installed by the Catholic and Protestant churches.

Although the church authorities discourage the pilgrims from drinking this water because it’s contaminated, a number of pilgrims are visibly seen drinking this water from their bottles.

A number of people still ask what the story behind the holy water of Namugongo is. “Those who killed the martyrs are believed to have washed the blood from their hands and spears from these waters. But it also depends on the faith of the pilgrims, a lot believe that this water performs miracles for them.” Rev. Esau Bbosa said.

Helen Adeke walked all the way from Kumi District to visit the Catholic Martyrs’ Shrine and to fetch the holy water.

When asked why the holy water is so important to her, she said, “When I pray with the holy water, my prayers are answered immediately. And when I fall ill, I use the holy water and I heal immediately. This is why every June I walk to come here.”

More people testified to the water helping them throughout most of their difficulties in life.
