Namibia’s President Geingob Dies at 82

The Namibian President, Dr. Hage Gottfried Geingob has died at the age of 82 from Lady Pohamba Hospital in Windhoek capital, where he was receiving treatment after battling with Cancer for some time.

This confirmation was made by H.E. Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, the acting President of the Republic of Namibia on the X official handle of Namibian Presidency on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

In a media release, H.E Mbumba noted that President Geingob died at around midnight on Sunday, February 4, 2024, while at Lady Pohamba Hospital where he was being attended to by his medical team.

“It is with utmost sadness and regret that I inform you that our beloved Dr. Hage G. Geingob, the President of the Republic of Namibia has passed on today, Sunday 4 February 2024 at around 00h04 at Lady Pohamba Hospital where he was receiving medical treatment from his medical team. At his side, was his dear wife Madame Monica Geingos and his children,” Dr. Mbumba stated.

Dr. Mbumba described the President as a distinguished servant of the people, a liberation struggle icon, the chief architect of the constitution and the pillar of the Namibian house.

The acting President has also called for the country’s cabinet to convene immediately to go through the necessary government steps, in line with protocol.

Hage Geingob was born on August 3, 1941.

Dr. Geingob was voted in as President on November 28, 2014 elections, while serving as Prime Minister. He was sworn as President on March 2015. He succeeded Hifikepunye Pohambe who stepped down at the end of two terms, as allowed by the constitution.

In 2007, he was chosen as Vice President of the ruling party and former liberation movement of South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), which has been in power since independence.
