The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the temporary closure of the Nakiwogo-Buwaya ferry crossing, which connects Entebbe Municipality to Mpigi District.
The ministry said that the ferry will be suspended from Monday, January 6, 2025, to undergo scheduled maintenance aimed at improving its safety and reliability.
In a public notice issued on January 1, 2025, Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa stated that the ferry service’s temporary closure is necessary to ensure the continued safe operation of the vessel.
“The maintenance works are part of our commitment to ensuring that the ferry operates efficiently and remains safe for all users,” Waiswa said.
The Nakiwogo-Buwaya ferry is a vital link for passengers traveling between Entebbe and Mpigi, and its suspension may cause significant inconvenience to those who rely on this service.

During the three-week closure, passengers are advised to take alternative routes.
“Passengers are advised to use the alternative route by road through Kisubi (Entebbe Road)-Sissa-Nakawuka-Kasanje to Buwaya,” the minister stated.
The ministry reassured the public that the maintenance will ensure the ferry’s continued performance and safety.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate the understanding and patience of our clients and stakeholders during this time,” Waiswa concluded.
The ferry service is scheduled to resume operations on Monday, January 27, 2025.
