The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has said that the MV Kalangala Ferry is now fully operational following the completion of emergency repairs on the vessel’s engines.
The ferry, which operates between Entebbe-Nakiwogo and Kalangala-Lutoboka, had been temporarily suspended after experiencing mechanical issues that stopped its regular operations.
The temporary closure affected thousands of commuters, traders, and tourists who rely on the ferry as a critical transport link between the mainland and Kalangala District.
In a public notice issued on 5th December, 2025, Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa confirmed that the vessel had been restored to safe and normal operating conditions and was now fully operational.
He urged the public to resume using the ferry according to the scheduled routes.
“The MV Kalangala Ferry has been restored and is now fully operational. We thank the public for their patience and understanding during the brief interruption,” Waiswa said.
Residents and business operators welcomed the news, noting the importance of the ferry in daily life.
Susan Nabisere trader in Kalangala said that this is great news for traders like me. I can now transport goods without delays, which is critical for my business,”
Tour operators and hotel owners also expressed relief, highlighting the ferry’s role in supporting tourism in the region.
Peter Oryem, a tour operator also welcomed the news saying that many tourists travel to Kalangala for leisure and safaris. The resumption of the MV Kalangala ensures that tourism and local businesses can continue smoothly.”
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safe and reliable transport services and promised to continue regular maintenance to avoid future disruptions.
Waiswa emphasized that safety remains our top priority. We will ensure regular inspections and maintenance so that such interruptions are minimized in the future.
The MV Kalangala Ferry is a lifeline for Kalangala District, supporting the movement of people, goods, and essential services across Lake Victoria, and its return to operation marks a significant relief for residents and businesses alike.
