Residents of Kalangala District are facing transport challenges following the temporary suspension of the MV Kalangala ferry, a vital link that thousands depend on for travel, trade, and access to essential services.
The Ministry of Works and Transport stopped the ferry’s operations on 3rd December 2025, after the vessel experienced emergency mechanical problems affecting its engines.
According to a statement issued to the public, Bageya Waiswa the permanent Secretary said the ministry acted swiftly to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.
“Our team is undertaking emergency repair interventions on the ferry engines, to restore the ferry to normal and safe operating conditions,” Waiswa said.
“Remain patient as engineers work to resolve the breakdown, we shall update the public when the ferry service resumes,” he added.
The MV Kalangala is the most direct route between Entebbe-Nakiwogo and Kalangala-Lutoboka, making it essential for daily commuters, students, health workers, and businesspeople.
Kato micheal a trader says the breakdown has disrupted the delivery of food supplies and other goods, some of which risk spoilage due to delays.
Tour operators are also concerned about tourists who travel between the island and mainland for tourism activities in kalangala, while patients seeking medical treatment on the mainland now face longer, more expensive journeys.
“The MV Kalangala temporary suspension is affecting local tour guides and lodge operators who rely heavily on the ferry’s consistent flow of visitors,” Kato said.
The ministry advised travellers to use the MV Ssesse and MV Rafiki, which operate between the Bukakata-Luuku and Nakiwogo-Lutoboka routes.
Many residents say that these alternatives routes are inconvenient and significantly increase travel time and transport costs.
Community leaders are urging the government to speed up the repairs, noting that even a few days without the ferry can severely disrupt livelihoods on the island.
For now, families, traders, and essential workers continue to navigate the uncertainty, hoping the vessel will be restored quickly to ease the growing strain on daily life.
