President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially been nominated by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission to contest for re-election as both the party’s National Chairman and the presidential flag bearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The nomination took place at the NRM headquarters in Kampala and was presided over by the party’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi.

President Museveni, who was accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education, Mama Janet Kataaha Museveni, was received with jubilant celebrations by hundreds of supporters from across the country.

“I want to thank the NRM Electoral Commission for nominating me. I hope the entire NRM membership and its structures will support my candidature as Chairman of the NRM for the 2025–2031 term and also as flag bearer for the 2026–2031 presidential race,” President Museveni said shortly after his nomination.

President Museveni outlined six major priorities that will define his next term if elected. These include, peace and security (no war and no crime), Development, Wealth creation, Job creation, Social services (such as health, education, spirituality, and hospitality) and Expanding markets for Ugandan products

He emphasized that politics should be driven by conviction and patriotism, not biology or careerism.

“Politics is not about biology (age, gender) or ‘jobology’ (careerism). If our generation had a jobist mentality, Uganda would never have been rescued. We left well-paying government jobs to fight for the salvation of Uganda,” he said, citing early NRM revolutionaries like Kategaya, Rwaheeru, and others.

The President urged the youth to volunteer in defense of national values, and tasked them to stand against corruption, fraud, criminality, and illegal land evictions.

“Defend legitimate interests don’t look on as corruption and crime eat away the country,” he said.

On the economic front, President Museveni reiterated the importance of personal responsibility in the fight against poverty.

He urged every household to participate in the money economy, leveraging government initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga to boost production and household income.

“Both wealth and poverty are personal. Each household must wake up and engage in the money economy,” the President stressed.

The NRM is expected to finalize its internal processes ahead of the 2026 general elections, with Museveni remaining the party’s most prominent and long-serving political figure, having led Uganda since 1986.
