President Yoweri Museveni has lauded the significant progress in Oyam District’s education sector, citing government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and improving learning conditions across the country.
Addressing a large crowd of supporters at Oyam Boma grounds on Tuesday, 7th October, 2025, the President mentioned education as a cornerstone of Uganda’s development and a key priority in the country’s development.
“Oyam is a clear example of what we can achieve when we invest in our children’s future. Our focus remains on removing barriers to education and building a skilled, empowered population, ” President Museveni said.
Oyam District now has 109 Universal Primary Education (UPE) schools, 10 government-aided secondary schools, and two government technical institutes.
He acknowledged a consistent rise in school enrolment, with UPE student numbers increasing from 142,119 in 2021 to 160,568 in 2025. USE school enrolment also rose from 6,831 to 6,927 during the same period.
Museveni linked the increase in enrolment to infrastructure development and improved staffing levels. The number of teachers in UPE schools grew from 1,470 to 1,511 between 2021 and 2025, while USE teaching staff rose from 212 to 215.
“We have prioritized the construction and staffing of new schools to create better learning environments. This is already yielding results, with the dropout rate falling from 17% in 2021 to 14% in 2025,” he noted.
He praised specific education projects, including the recently built Amaji Primary School, constructed under the Sinohydro Project.
Located in Oyam Town Council, the school currently enrols 1,164 pupils and is being promoted as a model for rural education infrastructure.
“Amaji Primary School stands as a testament to our commitment to quality education. Our investments are transforming communities and securing the future of our children, ” Museveni stated.
President Museveni is expected to continue his campaign trail in the Lango sub-region before heading to West Nile. His engagements include commissioning government projects and addressing key local issues as part of his 2026 re-election campaign.
