President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has extended the deadline to evict Balaalo (Nomads) from Northern Uganda until September 30, 2023.

In a letter dated July 2, 2023 and addressed to Gen. (Rtd.) Caleb Akandwanaho, the Presidential Advisor on Defense, President Museveni said the previous deadline ended on June 30, 2023.

The president directed Gen. Saleh, to study the situation and ensure that the nomads are expelled from the region.

“The only issues to take care of are the Balaalo cattle trampling people’s crops and legally buying or leasing the land the Balaalo are using,” said Museveni.

President Museveni said that the answer to cattle trampling is fencing strongly, providing farm water, and legally buying or leasing the land Balaalo are occupying for the latter.

In May 2023, President Museveni expelled Balaalo, accusing them of indiscipline and acquiring land illegally, which has led to endless conflicts in the region.

The cattle keepers, who are believed to have come from parts of DR Congo and Rwanda, are scattered in different locations in the Northern Region and grazing thousands of long-horned cattle.
