President Museveni has renewed AIGP Tom Magambo’s contract as Director of the Criminal Investigations Directorate for another two years.

Magambo, whose tenure was set to expire at the end of the month, has been instrumental in leading key investigations and implementing reforms to enhance Uganda’s criminal justice system.

Magambo expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the continued trust in his leadership.

“Your Excellency, @KagutaMuseveni, I am deeply honoured and humbled by your decision to renew my contract as Director CID. My colleagues and I, the CID, appreciate your trust and confidence in our ability to contribute to the strategic security and prosperity of our people,” Magambo posted on his X.

“I also wish to thank our Minister Kahinda Otafiire and the IGP for the leadership and guidance, as we strive to build a CID that will serve our people for many years,” he added.

Maj Tom Magambo Rwabudongo, born in 1978, hails from the Masindi District in the Bunyoro Sub-Region.

He began his education at Masindi Public School for his primary education before attending Duhaga Secondary School in Hoima for his Ordinary and Advanced Levels, and later joined Makerere University

Magambo joined the Internal Security Organisation (ISO) in 2002. Before his appointment as the head of the police Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), he served for twenty years in ISO, eventually reaching the rank of Chief Intelligence Officer (C.I.O) and Director of Analysis.

His responsibilities at ISO included heading Regional Affairs, where he engaged in EAC, IGAD, ICGLR, and AU Peace and Security Initiatives, as well as serving in Internal Counter Intelligence and Policy Analysis.

He also served as Acting DISO in Rukungiri and as a liaison officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was a Personal Assistant to the Director General Brig. Ronnie Balya.

Additionally, Magambo coordinated the Eastern Africa Fusion and Liaison Unit, which includes Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Djibouti, Burundi, and Rwanda. This unit supports regional cooperation to address terrorism and transnational crime

President Museveni appointed Tom Magambo as the new head of the police Criminal Investigations Directorate on January 25, 2022 and promoted him to the rank of Major.

Prior to this promotion, he was a Private in the UPDF, which surprised many in security circles.

In this role, Magambo was tasked with making significant changes to the CID. To this end, he initiated refresher training for all CID personnel to build a critical mass that understands the country’s direction.

Since his appointment, Magambo has been credited with changing the face of the Criminal Investigations Directorate by modernizing operations, tackling organized crime, and improving investigative efficiency.

AIGP Magambo’s contract renewal is seen as a strong endorsement of his leadership as the government continues efforts to support Uganda’s security and law enforcement institutions.
