Museveni Distances Self from Lira City Woman MP Battle, Pledges to Engage Ministers Amongi, Dr. Aceng

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has distanced himself from the current political battle in Lira City, where two senior ministers are battling for the position of the woman member of Parliament in 2926.

While addressing Lango journalists during a special media briefing held at Baralegi State Lodge in Otuke district on Wednesday, January 30th, 2025, President Museveni said he will soon meet Ministers Betty Amongi Akena of Gender Labor and Social Development and her colleague, Dr. Jane Aceng Ochero of Health, also the Lira City woman MP regarding the current fights.

He said it’s not good for the two ministers to keep up the fight, which has already sparked a huge split both among supporters of the ruling National Resistance Movement party.

Minister Amongi, the Oyam South MP in Oyam district has been conducting mobilizations within Lira City with the view to contest ad the Lira City Woman MP in 2026.

“I have not sent anybody to come here and confuse our people. I will soon talk to the two ministers to stop fighting. We need to consolidate our support,” Museveni said.

On Wednesday, January 29th, 2026, President Museveni, while addressing the Lango leaders’ meeting held at Kwania district headquarters, cautioned UPC leaders against repeating what he termed as historical mistakes that previously destabilized Uganda.

He also pledged to engage the UPC leader, Jimmy Akena Obote (Lira City East) legislator, Minister Betty Amongi, and the selected UPC elders.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has urged private sectors to target value addition opportunities of products produced by the Parish Development Model farmers.

The President, while addressing a public rally on PDM at Alanyi Prary School playgrounds on Thursday, January 30th, 2025, said there are several opportunities in value additions of products produced by farmers.

According to President Museveni, value addition cannot only be done by the government, but the private sector should prioritize it so as to create more markets and jobs.

He emphasized the need to utilize the prevailing peace in Lango and the entire country to create wealth.

The president also stressed the government’s commitment to ensuring free education for every child to reduce illiteracy.

During the rally, President Museveni received over 200 supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform party, NUP, who defected to the ruling NRM government.

Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua said the defectors are mainly university graduates who had been recruited by the NUP.

President Museveni has been in the Lango subregion conducting PDM assessments and wealth creation.
