President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has directed the Internal Security Organization-ISO and other local authorities to protect wetlands from encroachers and will soon issue an executive order against encroachment.

The president made the directive on Sunday, October 8th, during a televised national address at Nakasero state lodge ahead of Uganda’s 61st Independence Celebration.

In his directive, the president instructed ISO and other local authorities, including Parish Chiefs, Sub-county Chiefs, Resident District Commissioners, and Chief Administrative Officers, to ensure strict protection of wetlands.

Accordingly, President Museveni noted that 200 meters from the lake shores and 100 meters from the riverside must be left vacant to allow bushes to grow in them.

He further directed that no more new factories should be established in the wetland, and residential houses that have been built in the wetland must be demolished with immediate effect.

“All residential houses and factories built in wetlands must be demolished. For example, those in Busoga and Bukedea were misled by the governments during earlier regimes. We will assist and relocate them to other places,” said Museveni.

On corruption, the president cautioned those wishing to do business in Uganda not to pay bribes and must report the vice to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

“We need to eliminate corruption. Do not pay bribes; it’s not necessary. Report the culprits to the State House anti-corruption team, and they will face the consequences,” said President Museveni.

President Museveni further noted the importance of uniting Africa above colonial borders, which he says will create a huge market for both Ugandans and other countries.

On October 9, Uganda will celebrate its 61st Independence Day in Kitgum district.
