Mulago National Referral Hospital in conjunction with the Ministry of Health are conducting a free surgical week which has begun on October 2-6, 2023, where specialized surgery services will be offered to people at no cost.

Some of the surgery services to be offered are Nuero surgery, Orthopedics surgery, Pediatrics surgery, Gastrointestinal tract surgery, Colorectal surgery, Anesthesia services, Nutrition services, Urology, Endocrine, Oral maxillofacial, Organ transplant and emergency services using the latest technologies, among others.

Dr. Rosemary Byanyima, the Acting Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital stated that, the main aim for this move is to create awareness to Ugandans who are always traveling abroad for medical issues for them to know that the complications can be treated in Uganda.

“Mulago National Hospital has the capability to treat some of these complications through the improved technology and medical machinery that has been put up in the hospital and the highly educated and trained health officers,” she noted.

Emmanuel Ainebyona, the Public Relations Officer at Ministry of Health said that, the free surgical week is a give back to Ugandans who hugely contribute to the advancement of the national hospital through paying their taxes.

“We want to offer these free surgeries to the people that cannot afford to pay for them in private hospitals or go abroad and make sure that they can appreciate the work of their taxes,” he said.

He also added that, the move is to showcase the ability of the hospital and its officials to carry out some of the complicated surgeries.

“Mulago hospital has been selected as one of the 2027 AFCON health providers, so we want to showcase the new technologies that the hospital has received and also to showcase our well trained doctors and nurses,” Ainebyona added.

The screening process already commenced on Monday, October 2, 2023, and all Ugandans have been encouraged to go for checkups and also tell a friend to save lives.
