The Mubende district leaders have called upon government and security agencies to intervene in the increasing numbers of refugees who are being dropped
off on the Mubende streets to beg for money, citing that they could be possible terrorists.

These remarks were made on March 20, 2024, by the Mubende Municipality Mayor Innocent Sekiziyivu during an interview with journalists, where he expressed his worry about a possible increment in insecurity and terrorism due to the unknown people in Mubende district who have flooded the streets as beggars in Buwekula County.

Sekiziyivu said that there are unknown people bringing these refugees every morning from their camps to beg for money.

’’These people have flooded the streets of Mubende as beggars. They are given cups every morning to beg for money, which is later collected from them, and in exchange, they are given posho and beans, and they are transported back by the people who drop them off,’’ Sekiziyivu revealed.

He added that these refugees flocking the Mubende streets are allegedly from the Kyaka II refugee camp found in Kyegwegwa district, since it is near Mubende district.

The Mubende Municipality Mayor revealed that most of these refugees are disabled and mainly speak Swahili, making it difficult for the locals to understand what they are saying.

Sekiziyivu further called upon the residents of Mubende City not to associate with these people because their whereabouts and intentions are still unknown. However, he urged the locals to report to the authorities anything suspicious about the refugees.
