Members of parliament (MPs) have maintain their position for the government to reduce the cost of new digital number plates in the country.

During the plenary session on Thursday, August 9, 2023, Patrick Nsamba, a Member of Parliament for Kassanda North urged that, the cost of new digital numbers plates imposed are very expensive to an ordinary road user.

“From 49,000 shillings to 714,000 shillings is very expensive. The ministry should put this into consideration that  the road users cannot afford since they are poor and why bring in the new technology when there are companies in Ugandan that make number plates,” Nsamba stated.

Nsamba further stated that the new digital number plates technology introduced by government will just make the road users poor because the registration of new road users is Ugx  714,000 from Ugx 49,000, while the ones already using it are to pay Ugx 450,000.

This comes after the Security Minister, Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, defended the cost, adding that, the investor has to recover all the money used in making of the digital number plates.
