The Pakwach District Woman Member of Parliament Jane Pacuto has requested the government provide motorized boats to the teachers and students in Pakwach district, arguing that the bursting of the R. Nile has made access to education difficult.

She made this request on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, during the plenary sitting at parliament.

According to Pacuto, the people in Pakwach are unable to access school, and the teachers are rebelling because they want motorized boats.

“There are very many young people from Pakwach who are not able to access schools, and there are teachers who have rebelled because they want motorized boats from the Office of the Prime Minister because they can no longer manage to cross on the small canoes,” Pacuto said.

She said that it is not the first time that the R. Nile has burst its banks; however, young people are not accessing education, and most important, primary seven pupils are about to sit for their final examination.

In reaction, the government’s Chief Whip, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, directed MP Pacuto to the responsible ministry so that her issues can be handled directly.

The Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, urged the MP to link up with the Chief Wipe so that the children are helped.

In June 2024, eight villages in Pakwach were cut off after the Nile burst its banks, causing flooding in the area.
