SICKLY: MP Ssegirinya

Parliament and the office of the Leader of Opposition have jointly confirmed not to be aware of the ongoing medical treatment of Kawempe North MP Mohammed Ssegirinya in the Netherlands.

Chris Obore, the Parliament’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, has said all legislators and their immediate family members are entitled to medical insurance.

“In the case of Ssegirinya, he traveled without the clearance of the Medical Board and without notification to the speaker of parliament and Leader of Opposition (LOP); this makes it hard for parliament to process funds for such a case,” said Obore.

Mathias Mpuuga, the Leader of Opposition (LOP), also confirmed that MP Ssegirinya traveled without any notification to the offices of the LOP and NUP party headquarters.

“My attention has been drawn to comments on social media relating to the condition of our colleague, who is currently indisposed and receiving treatment in the Netherlands. The office has since been following this matter to ensure he gets the necessary help through the parliament’s known procedures,” Mpuuga said.

MP Ssegirinya is in the Netherlands for treatment after being diagnosed with cancer of the skin. He was recently accused of failing to pay his medical bills, which have accumulated to about eighty million shillings.
