The Member of Parliament for Kyamuswa County in Kalangala district, Moses Kabusu, has opposed the directive banning traveling on the lake at night.

Moses Byamukama, the Minister of Works, stopped all night water transport last week in a bid to reduce the risk of water accidents.

According to MP Kabuusu, the best and safest time to travel is at night when the water is calm with less wind.

“The government must ensure that the rescue centers where you gave them public finances are built. Rescue centers must have radars and other gadgets that communicate with the rescue centers. But stopping people from traveling at night is hampering our economics as Islanders. Why would people drive milk during the day? Why do people drive matooke during the day? And they don’t want people selling fish to travel at night. Travelling at night is done on rail, on air, on the road, and why not on water?” Kabuusu said.

Last week, on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at around 5:00 a.m., a boat capsized in Lake Victoria, killing about 25 people. Loaded with charcoal, fresh food, and silverfish, the boat was blown many miles before capsizing near Nsanzi Island in Mukono district.
